How to Make a Banner

Materials Needed:

  1. Planned Design printed on paper and transparency.

  2. Blank Banner

  3. Sign cloth (pattern-paper) from art store or sign company.

  4. 'Wonder-Under'  This can be purchased at your local hobby or cloth and sewing store.

  5. Scotch tape

  6. Scissors

  7. Carbon or Graphite paper

  8. Overhead projector

  9. Work table

  10. Pencil

  11. T-Shirt paint in tubes that are easy to handle and squeeze.

  12. Safe Area to allow T-shirt paint to dry

  13. Babysitter (you're nuts if you try this while your kids are running around!)

Rather than trying to draw  your letters freehand, type your phrase or sentence in the font you prefer on your computer.  As a matter of fact, the entire banner can be laid out in this way!

  1. Print design on paper, and copy on a transparency.

  2. Cut out the size of banner that you will be making,  from the sign cloth or pattern-paper.

  3. Find a wall that is white and smooth and tape the paper to the wall.

  4. Put the transparency on your overhead projector and project onto the pattern paper, moving the projector until the letters fit like you want them to.

  5. Trace your pattern onto the paper.

  6. Iron 'Wonder-Under' onto the back of your cloth letter material, but do not remove the protective layer. ('Wonder-Under' or something similar can be found at your favorite cloth and sewing store, or hobby store in the material department.)

  7. Flip the paper over so the letters are backwards to you and trace the lines with carbon paper (or paper that has been coated with graphite from a soft pencil to act like carbon paper) onto the 'Wonder-Under' paper that is attached to your material that is also face down on your table.

  8. Be sure to move your paper around the material to trace letters closely to conserve your material. Remember, you still have the pattern on your pattern paper.

  9. Cut out the letters once you have traced them all onto the material.

  10. Pin your banner to the back side of your sign pattern-paper so that you can see your design laid out on top of your material.

  11. Lay the banner down on top of your table and slip each letter in place, ironing letter into place.  Be careful, and don't get in a hurry - once the letter is attached to your material - it is attached. Your pattern-paper will ensure that your letters are laid out just like you made them on your computer - nice and straight, all of them the correct size and spacing.

  12. Once your letters and designs have all been transferred you can outline the edges of the cut letters with T-shirt paint to give a nice bead of color and outline to each letter. This will also ensure that through time, the edges don't lift.
